The Usual Suspects: Inside The Lineup, Hatlock’s Daily Cap Game

Every detective has stood behind the one-way glass, watching suspects squint into the lights. Now it is your turn. The Lineup is the site’s new daily game. At midnight Eastern, one New Era cap steps into the light, badly lit and wildly out of focus, and you get six guesses to name the team. Everyone gets the same suspect, all day. Play today’s case.

Five fitted caps in a police lineup against a height chart marked in hat sizes, the middle one a mystery silhouette with a question mark
The usual suspects. In this precinct, the height chart is marked in fitted sizes.

How the Interrogation Works

The photo opens eight squares wide, about 64 squares in all. A Rubik’s Cube has 54 stickers and has been ruining afternoons since 1974, so good luck. Every miss sharpens the picture, but the clear photo only comes out once the case closes.

For the first three misses, the board just says no, seven different ways, from Nope to No dice. Miss a fourth time and you get the league, and your earlier guesses light up: yellow for the right league, red for nowhere near. Miss a fifth and you get the first letter of the team name. Miss a sixth and the suspect gets away.

The Suspect Pool

Answers come from MLB, NFL, NBA and NHL: 125 teams, so a blind first guess lands one time in 125. Throwbacks count too. The Hartford Whalers left Hartford in 1997 and are still a possible answer, because New Era still has one on the rack. In this precinct, nobody is ever fully cleared.

The Case Log

Four cases are closed so far. Tap a suspect’s photo to sharpen it one miss at a time, and count how many taps you need. The answers are under the flaps, and no, there is no prize for peeking.

Tap the photo to sharpen it

    Who was it?

Las Vegas Raiders (NFL). Star Studded 59FIFTY, $37.49 (was $49.99)

Star Studded, says the label. The Raiders have been in Las Vegas since 2020 and it shows.

  3. No. 3 · October 5

Tap the photo to sharpen it

    Who was it?

Tampa Bay Rays (MLB). Pinstripe Merino & Cashmere Moon 59FIFTY, $74.99 (was $99.99)

Merino and cashmere at $74.99, and that is the sale price. The priciest suspect so far, and the only one that showed up with a lawyer.

  4. No. 4 · October 6

Tap the photo to sharpen it

    Who was it?

Boston Red Sox (MLB). Three Looms Leafy Palm 59FORTY A-Frame, $44.99 (was $59.99)

A Boston cap covered in palm leaves. Somebody check this suspect’s alibi, because it has clearly never seen February at Fenway.

Prices from the deal board on October 7, 2026. They may have moved since.

Somewhere in the precinct, tomorrow’s suspect is already waiting in the holding cell, blissfully unaware that it is about to be reduced to 64 squares and judged by strangers. It walks in at midnight Eastern. Bring your guesses. Squint responsibly.
