A deal detective never sees the shop window. He sees the back of the store — the rack by the stockroom door, the caps wearing a second sticker. Retail tells you what a city wants. Clearance tells you what a city ordered too much of.
So I counted both. New York: 211 caps on the discount rack. Boston: 73. That is 2.89 New Yorks per Boston, roughly the rate at which New York does everything.
Then came the number that made me put the glass down. The Yankees alone have 80 caps marked down. The whole city of Boston has 73. One team has out-discounted a rival city, and the drawer has run out of places to put it.
The Penny
Boston's cheapest cap is $14.99. New York's cheapest is $15.00.
After a 64% discount, at the bottom of the bin, on the last day of the sale, New York is still a cent more expensive. I have read that back four times and it has not stopped being the most New York sentence in this case file.
Boston cuts deeper, too — 66% off at best against New York's 64%. Even in the bargain bin, the Bronx refuses to be undersold. Or rather, refuses to be under-priced, which is a costlier habit.
Exhibit: The Knicks
There are exactly two Knicks caps on the entire board. Both sit at 25% off, a $40.87 median — the shallowest discount and the highest price in either city.
In fairness, let me phrase the finding precisely: the Knicks are the only New York club the clearance rack won't mark down, and they achieve this by barely appearing on it. The market does not value them. The market has not been given the opportunity to feel otherwise.

The defence will say stores stock more New York to begin with, a Yankees cap being a global product and a Bruins cap not. Granted. I'd grant it more warmly if Boston's rack weren't also cheaper at the floor and deeper at the top. A shelf nobody stocks rarely produces the two best discounts in the file.
None of which is an insult to the hats. The interlocking NY is the finest two letters in the history of headwear and I will not be taking questions. There are simply a tremendous number of them, and the rack has developed feelings about it.
Boston wins on price. New York wins on volume. Both of you, please, take a cap off the rack.
